Hello Chair Frisch,
Thank you for reaching out and sharing your community’s boundary concerns and advocacy. I am also sharing this information with members of our leadership team who are directly involved in this work.
As I noted during our call, no boundary changes have been proposed, and no potential school boundary adjustments have been mapped out for Oakton High School or anywhere else in the school division. In other words, no maps have been drawn and no “secret maps” exist.
The first technical data on boundary topics was provided to the consultant last week to run the first scenario, which is to see the possibility of moving sixth grade into middle schools across the county (a best practice for enhanced academic achievement).
We are currently nearing completion of Phase 1 of the boundary review process, which is focused on collecting input from our families and community members. As you know, we held a series of in-person meetings in each FCPS region at the end of last year, and we recently concluded a series of virtual community meetings.
If members of your community did not have an opportunity to attend one of these community meetings, the presentation and meeting agendas are available on our Comprehensive School Boundary Review webpage. We encourage community members to review the information, and then share their feedback or ask any questions.
The input community members provide – along with all of the input we received from the in-person and virtual community meetings – will be analyzed and incorporated into formulating various draft scenarios. Once the scenarios have been drafted, we will be holding another round of community meetings and sending community surveys to gather feedback. A timeline and more about the process are on pages 5-6 of the presentation. As you’ll see, the full process is scheduled to continue until spring 2026.
On the boundary review webpage, community members will find more information about the purpose of this review. They will also find a link to the webpage for the Superintendent’s Boundary Review Advisory Committee. This committee includes parents, caregivers, and/or community members from each of our 24 high school pyramids as well as school-based and division administrators, teachers, operational staff, and other community representatives.
This group will use the community feedback and data analysis to help develop boundary scenarios and make recommendations in alignment with Policy 8130, which prioritizes access to programming, enrollment/capacity, proximity, and transportation. I will then consider their suggestions and present my recommendations to the School Board for review and approval of any potential boundary adjustments.
We will continue to provide information and post updates on these web pages:
· Comprehensive School Boundary Review
· Superintendent’s Boundary Review Advisory Committee
In addition, we invite community members to sign up for the Boundary Review newsletter to also stay informed throughout this process.
I greatly appreciate the community’s engagement and encourage everyone’s continued involvement as this important process moves forward.
Best,
Michelle Reid, Ed.D.
